PLA, PETG, ABS, or ASA? Choosing the Right 3D Printing Material

One of the first questions we ask every customer is: what is this piece actually going to do? The right material depends far more on how a piece will be used than on how it looks on a screen — and picking the wrong one is the most common way a good design turns into a disappointing print.

PLA — the detail specialist

PLA is our go-to for miniatures, display pieces, and anything where fine detail matters more than raw toughness. It's easy to print cleanly at fine layer heights, holds sharp edges well, and takes primer and paint beautifully. The tradeoff is heat resistance — a PLA piece left on a car dashboard in the Cape Town sun will warp. Keep it indoors and it'll last indefinitely.

PETG — the all-rounder

When a part needs to survive daily use — brackets, clips, housings, anything that might get knocked, dropped, or left outside — PETG is usually our first recommendation. It's tougher than PLA, handles moderate heat and moisture well, and still prints with good detail. Most of the functional replacement parts we produce are PETG.

ABS — built for stress

ABS is the choice when a part needs to take real abuse: automotive components, engineering fixtures, anything exposed to sustained heat. It requires an enclosed, temperature-controlled print chamber to avoid warping — which is exactly why all our ABS runs happen on our enclosed printers with active filtration.

ASA — ABS's weatherproof cousin

If a part lives outdoors, ASA is almost always the right call. It shares ABS's strength and heat resistance but holds its colour and shape far better under UV exposure and coastal weather — a real consideration here in Cape Town. We use it for outdoor fixtures, automotive trim, and anything that needs to survive direct sun for years, not months.
