Some jobs arrive with plenty of lead time. This one came in Wednesday afternoon for a Saturday handover. Three days, a missing colour, and a same-day courier order later — done.

Who is Refreshi

Refreshi is South Africa's food rescue app. They connect shoppers with surplus food from restaurants, bakeries, and stores at up to 50% off — the kind of stock that would otherwise get thrown away at end of day. It's a good thing, and it's growing.

The connection to us was personal. Their Head of Marketing is a primary school friend, and they found us through SKROP Sneaker Cleaning — one of our regular Cape Town clients who'd mentioned us as their go-to for printed parts. Word of mouth from the right people is how most of our best jobs arrive.

The brief

Branded keychains. The Refreshi logo is a Pac-Man-style mark in yellow-green on a dark teal, which looks great in print — the contrast is sharp and the colours are distinctive enough that you'd spot one on a keyring from across a room.

They needed a batch printed and ready to go. No complex geometry, no fitting tolerances, no engineering headaches — just get the colours right, get the quantity, and get them out in time.

The filament problem

Here's where it got interesting. We didn't stock the specific teal. The green we had was close but not right for a branded order where the client hands these out to people who know what their logo looks like.

Rather than print something approximating and hope for the best, we ordered the correct colour from Amazon.co.za on same-day delivery. It arrived that afternoon, went straight into the printer, and we started the production run the same evening.

The print

The keychains are multicolour PLA — teal base layer, yellow Pac-Man mark and lettering on top. Each one has a keyring hole moulded into the end. The print bed fit a full batch at once, so each run came off looking identical, which matters when you're handing out something with a brand on it.

Three days from first message to finished batch. The same-day delivery added a few hours of stress but didn't blow the timeline — we had enough margin in the build schedule to absorb it.

What made it work

Tight deadlines are manageable when the design is clear and the geometry is simple. A keychain is a straightforward print — no supports, no assembly, no post-processing beyond a quick quality check. The only variable was the filament, and once that was sorted the prints ran overnight without issue.

The harder part of any short-turnaround job is making the call early: is something blocking this or not? Here the answer was yes — wrong colour is a real block for a branded item — and dealing with it on day one rather than hoping it would be fine left room for everything else to go smoothly.
