A Hand-Painted Wolverine Bust for the PS5 Launch

Marvel's Wolverine is out on PS5, and a release like that deserved something on the shelf. So we made a bust of Logan in his classic suit, 3D printed and hand-painted, and photographed it all the way around.

The classic suit

There have been plenty of Wolverine looks over the years, but the yellow-and-black suit is the one everyone pictures. It's all graphic shapes: the black panels sweep down the chest and sides, the yellow runs down the centre, and the cowl finishes in the two tall fins that make the silhouette recognisable from across a room.

That means the paint job is mostly about clean edges. The black and the yellow meet everywhere on this piece: along the cowl, around the eyes, down the torso and over the shoulders. Every one of those lines is painted by hand.

Gloss and matte

The black is finished in a gloss, so it catches the light the way a moulded suit would, and it gives the sculpted muscle detail on the shoulders and chest some highlights to work with. The face stays matte, with the sideburns and hair in a darker brown painted over the skin tone. The contrast is what stops the face looking like part of the suit.

Finished all the way round

A bust is usually photographed from the front and put on a shelf the same way. We still paint the back properly, because sooner or later someone picks it up and turns it around. The suit pattern carries on over the shoulders and down the back, and the cowl's black and yellow split continues behind the head.

The whole thing sits on a stepped black base, which lifts it up and gives it the proportions of a display piece rather than a loose figure.
